Looking at a poster in Bath market this morning I noticed that the following bands recently played at The Fleece in Bristol, 'The Dickies', 'The Lurkers', 'Angelic Upstarts' and 'The Rezillos' all of whom played at my student uni bar between 1978 and 1981 (although it wasn't a university 'back in the day' merely a college of further education, otherwise disguised as an early-learning drinking establishment) I didn't know any of those bands still existed (granted I doubt if they ever knew I existed.)
I wonder if the fire, passion, excitement and anger is still burning within their performances (as I type this, with the twinge of rheumatism in my left hand I'm drawing my own conclusions.) 55 to 60 year old punks thrashing out the Banana Splits theme must be a sight to behold, but hopefully they're earning enough to fund some sort of pension, and thanks for the memories...but I prefer for them to stay as that...good memories.
At least two of the people I saw 'The Dickies' with are no longer around, that particular group of friends having had a death rate on par with 'The Pretenders.'
Also playing in The Fleece soon is John Otway, not that he's really been away, however I think it's been a while since he's been on planet earth.
'Let me be your bunsen burner!' Now they don't write 'em like that any more, pure misguided genius.
